Alloy 420 is a hardenable, martensitic stainless steel that is an alteration of Alloy 410. Alloy 420 has higher carbon content than Alloy 410 which is intended to advance quality and hardness attributes. It has great malleability it the strengthened condition yet is equipped for being solidified up to Rockwell hardness 50 HRC, the most elevated hardness of the 12% chromium grades. Because of its solidifying properties, Alloy 420 is not regularly welded, in spite of the fact that it is conceivable. Martensitic stainless steels are intended for high hardness and here and there different properties are to some degree bargained. Erosion resistance is lower than the basic austenitic evaluations and their valuable working reach is restricted by their loss of malleability at below zero temperatures and loss of quality by over-treating at hoisted temperatures. Its best erosion resistance is accomplished when the metal is solidified.

Stainless Steel 420 Sheet Sizes

Type 420 Stainless Steel, a modification of 410, has a higher carbon content to increase hardness, improve strength and give better wear resistance. This type maintains its best corrosion resistance in the heat treated condition. Tempering temperatures above 700° F. are not normally recommended and Type 420 must be preheated before and annealed after welding.
Principal applications: Bushings, Dental and Surgical Instruments, Pump Parts, Valve Parts, and Shafts. Our 420 is not bought or recommended to a cutlery grade.

Grade 420 stainless steel is a high-carbon steel with a minimum chromium content of 12%. Like any other stainless steel, grade 420 can also be hardened through heat treatment. It offers good ductility in its annealed state and excellent corrosion resistance properties when the metal is polished, surface grounded or hardened. This grade has the highest hardness - 50HRC - among all the stainless steel grades with 12% chromium.
Stainless steel grades that are similar to grade 420 stainless steels include martensitic steels such as the other versions of grade 420, having vanadium, sulphur and molybdenum in their composition, and the grade 440 series. Non-standard grade 420C has carbon content that is little higher than that of grade 420.
Martensitic stainless steels are ones with high hardness and high carbon content. These steels are generally fabricated using methods that require hardening and tempering treatments. The operating conditions of martensitic steels are affected by loss of material’s strength at high temperatures, and decrease in ductility at negative temperatures.
SS 420 ( EN1.4016 )
A martensitic machining bar with machinability enhanced through the addition of Sulphur. As for most other free-machining stainless steels the improvement in machinability is achieved by addition of sulphur which forms manganese sulphide inclusions; this sulphur addition also lowers the corrosion resistance, weldability and formability to below that of its non-free machining equivalent Grade 410. Martensitic stainless steels are optimised for high hardness, and other properties are to some degree compromised. Fabrication must be by methods that allow for poor weldability and usually also allow for a final harden and temper heat treatment. Corrosion resistance is lower than the common austenitic grades, and their useful operating temperature range is limited by their loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures and loss of strength by over-tempering at elevated temperatures.

420 grade stainless steel is a very common used stainless steel grade and this grade is one of the most popular martensitic grade in the world. Most widely used version is 1.4016 which is X20Cr13. Other two populer versions are 420 (1.4028 - X30Cr13) and 420 (1.4034 - X46Cr13). The number next to X shows the carbon content of the grade in 1/10000. So X46Cr13 contain %0.46 C element. All these versions of 420 can be heat threated and you can find all these three versions at Metal Scope (India) .

AISI 420 ( 1.4016, 1.4028, 1.4031, 1.4034 and 1.4037 ) High carbon martensite stainless steel strips in coils

Martensitic stainless steels, high carbon-chromium, have been developed for a number of applications after cold rolling, such as razor blades, surgical knives, scissors, cutlery, pressure diaphragms, valve components, bacon slicers and circlips. According to the different carbon content of AISI 420 grade, it can be divided into five categories:

SS 420 is a heat treatable martensitic chromium stainless steel. Melt practice is controlled to develop a surface nearly free from defects. It provides the best combination of wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and is used in demanding medical accessories.

NOMINAL COMPOSITION: Chromium 12.5% Nickel .20% Manganese .50% Carbon .22% Silicon .50% Iron Balance

Alloy 420 is a hardenable, martensitic stainless steel that is a modification of Alloy 410. Similar to 410, it contains a minimum of 12% chromium, just sufficient enough to give corrosion resistant properties. Alloy 420 has higher carbon content than Alloy 410 which is designed to optimize strength and hardness characteristics. It has good ductility it the annealed condition but is capable of being hardened up to Rockwell hardness 50 HRC, the highest hardness of the 12% chromium grades. Due to its hardening properties, Alloy 420 is not often welded, although it is possible. Martensitic stainless steels are designed for high hardness and sometimes other properties are to some degree compromised. Corrosion resistance is lower than the common austenitic grades and their useful operating range is limited by their loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures and loss of strength by over-tempering at elevated temperatures. Its best corrosion resistance is achieved when the metal is hardened and surface ground or polished.

Applications:

Alloy 420 is used for a variety of applications where good corrosion and outstanding hardness is necessary. It is not usually used at temperatures exceeding 800oF (427oC) due to quick hardening and loss of corrosion resistance. Examples of applications that use alloy 420 include:

  • Cuttery
  • Knife blades
  • Surgical instruments
  • Needle valves
  • Shear blades
  • Scissors
  • Hand tools

Standards:

  • ASTM/ASME: UNS S42000
